Youth Lyric presents ‘The Great Gatsby’ at the Waterfront Studio from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th March.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic story, directed for Youth Lyric by Sheelagh O’Kane will transport you back to the racy, roaring twenties as you follow mid-westerner Nick Carraway to Long Island, New York where he meets the mysterious Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire with a shady past who throws legendary parties. The Great Gatsby holds mystery and excitement as this story of love, lies and tragedy unfolds.
Young actors between the ages of 13 and 20 years old bring the breath-taking glamour and decadent excesses of the Jazz Age to life. Gatsby passionately pursues the elusive Daisy Buchanan and Nick, the young newcomer, is drawn into their world of obsession, greed and danger.
Youth Lyric is delighted to partner with students across 11 courses at Belfast Metropolitan College, who provide skills including Stage Management, Music, Acting, Graphic Design, Event Management, Theatrical and Media Make Up, Costume Design and Architectural Technology with Sustainable Design and in doing so, gain valuable experience and credit towards their academic qualification.
The show’s director Sheelagh O’Kane said: “It’s fantastic working with the young people of YOUTH LYRIC who bring a real freshness to this production. Their enthusiasm is infectious and we’ve got some great music from the era, like “Minnie the Moocher” and “Makin’ Whoopee”. We’re delighted to be bringing “The Great Gatsby” to the prestigious Waterfront studio.”
Youth Lyric trustee and lecturer at Belfast Met, Lynda Bryans said: “I am so proud when I see our students’ talents shining on stage. With Youth Lyric they’re not only developing their performance skills, but building confidence, and life-long friendships.”
